Below you will find a partial list of potential breeders...a
good place to start. Feel free to call me and ask me personally for my referrals (706) 931-2963. I have been breeding cats since the mid-80's and I have been involved in the Munchkin breeder community and now I am
acting Chairman of the Napoleon Breed Group. A good reputation is known amongst the other breeders. Anybody can have
a webpage showing selective positive comments about cats that they have sold or titles that they have achieved. Even an unethical
breeder has some good cats, but again...a good reputation is known amongst your peers. So, ask me, and ask several of
the other breeders to form a consensus before you buy a kitten. I will list a few suggestions for you to ponder
"before" you start calling or especially before you agree to purchase a kitten. (Remember, a list of potential breeders
is at the bottom.)
1. Get your
intuition kicked into high gear. Look, listen, and ask lots of questions. Anybody can have a website. Anybody can
spend money on a magazine ad. Years of experience is invaluable but it doesn't equate with being ethical. So, be prepared
with a list of questions and don't rush your decision.
2.
The reputable breeders will have the recommendations from many other breeders. While it
might be awkward to ask "what breeders should I avoid?", it is quite acceptable to ask "do you recommend so-in-so?"
or "tell me 2-3 breeders that you personally recommend." If you don't get a good consensus on a breeder's
reputation, then you might consider looking elsewhere. A bargain is not a bargain if you have an unhealthy cat or an unsocialized
cat.
3. Make sure that there is
a contract and ask specifics about any health guarantee. When you ship a kitten, a health certificate has to be
issued within 10 days of shipping by a vet. This certificate alone does not mean that the kitten has been actually "examined"
by a vet but only a verification of vaccinations. Make sure that any kitten that you purchase has been recently and thoroughly
checked by the breeder's vet prior to you receiving the kitten. Granted, we are dealing with live animals and every
possible health issue can not be avoided but there should always be a fair health guarantee allowing you an opportunity to
have your own vet exam the kitten to give it a clean bill of health.
4.
Don't pay for show quality if you have no idea what show quality looks like. On the same turn, pet qualitiy doesn't
mean that the kitten is any less beautiful - only that it does not fit to the tee in most attributes according to our written
show standard.
5. Take time to ask your
questions and to get proper questions. If the breeder seems more interested in making a quick sale instead of inquiring
about aspects of "where your precious kitten would be going" then you may want to think twice. A reputable breeder
has invested not only money but time and affection on her kittens. A reputable breeder is just as concerned about where her
kitten will live as you are about finding the right kitten.
6.
Understand the lingo: Standard means that the kitten will be shortlegged - like
our standard touts itself. Non-standard then implies that the kitten will not have that trait so its legs will be a
regular leg length. We often call these non-standards as longleggeds even though their legs are no longer than a typical cat
(or Persian) but just "longer" than what the standard (shortlegged) kittens are. Rughugger is often used as
a synonymn to standard. Technically though, some of these Napoleons are almost "extra low" in the leg.
